Underwater Art Museum near Isla Mujeres, Cancun, Mexico 2012

In 2009 an underwater Art museum called MUSA (Museo Subacuatico de Arte) was opened near Isla Mujeres, Cancun.  Over 403 permanent life-size sculptures were sunken underwater that makes this museum one of the largest and most ambitious underwater art attraction in the world.
We took a high speed glass bottom boat to check that out.  It’s just a 10 minute ride from Dreams Cancun Resort’s pier. We got tickets at Dreams Cancun Resort at tour desk for $40 per person, which includes speed boat ride, snorkeling near MUSA, refreshment drinks on boat. The whole trip takes about 1,5 hours.

The guy on the picture above was our Captain. He said that boat was built in St. Petersburg, Russia. And when they called it “high speed boat” they weren’t joking about it.

Shortly we arrived at MUSA. Our Capitan asked us if we would like to have any drinks (water, soda or beer) and took us to the lower level of the boat where we could watch marine life through the glass. Also, he explained how this park was founded, names of the sculptures when we approached each of them, fish names when we saw some.

That is life size 8 ton cement replica of the classic Volkswagen Beetle. There are holes and empty space inside it specifically designed to house marine life. Looks way smaller through the boat’s glass…

Each sculpture is made out of materials used to promote coral life. The whole area of this museum is about 420sq meters and weighing about 180 tons.

After we cruised a bit over MUSA, Capitan offered us to snorkel in Caribbean Sea. The crew staff gave us snorkeling gear and explained safety rules on water. One of the crew guys was in water with us all time for safety purposes and showed us the most scenic underwater views.

Overall I liked the tour. It was fun, always liked water attraction.
Tip: I suggest going on this tour with empty stomach, I mean not after all-inclusive buffetJ. When you get there it gets pretty bumpy and some people get sea-sick.
